WT football staff assists at accident scene

The three buses carrying West Texas A&M players, coaches and other sideline personnel stopped about 3 a.m. Sunday at the scene of a one-vehicle accident just south of San Antonio. Buffs coach Don Carthel said the driver of a Toyota sedan was seriously injured after his car left the highway and hit plastic drums protecting the support pillars of an overpass. Carthel said he believed the man fell asleep at the wheel and his car struck the barrier at full freeway speed. Defensive coordinator Colby Carthel was in the first bus in WT's caravan and was the first to go to the man. WT training staff with medical expertise was in a third bus and joined Colby Carthel and other coaches at the accident scene. The man gave his name and cell phone calls were made to his wife and sister. The buses left only after paramedics transported the injured man to San Antonio hospital. Don Carthel said it took 45 minutes for an ambulance to arrive after a 9-1-1 call was made. he said Monday that his staff was trying find out the man's condition. "We always thank our bus drivers for staying alert and getting us home safely," Don Carthel said.
