ACU has the stuff of a final four team

While teams from the Lone Star Conference have dotted the national poll the past three years, with West Texas A&M twice going as high as No. 4 and ACU to No. 3 this year, the question has been this: Does the team have what it takes to win in the playoffs beyond the second round? I'd say this about ACU: the Wildcats are national championship contenders this year. ACU returned its mighty offense but during the offseason, retooled its defense. Instead of having to outscore its opponents this year, as WT had to do in its breakout 2005 season, the 'Cats can do it on both sides of the ball. If ACU can put up 52 points on West Texas A&M and then fend off three Buffs' second-half charges, the Wildcats appear ready to take on the likes of Grand Valley, Delta State and North Alabama. Their win of Northwest Missouri was no fluke; beating the Bearcats in the playoffs will be a different. But a healthy and talented ACU team is deserving of being elevated to No. 2 this week.
