Top-ranked Valdosta gets USC-ed

The upset bug that infected Division I last weekend has claimed its first victim this weekend in Division II. On Thursday, Delta State got a field goal in the second overtime to upend No. 1 and defending national champion Valdosta State, 27-24. It was Delta's fourth straight win after opening the season with a loss to Football Championship Subdivision member McNeese State. The big this week was supposed to be No. 6 Pitt State vs. No. 7 Northwest Missouri State. Another top-25 matchup pitted No. 17 Midwestern against No. 5 West Texas A&M. Valdosta's loss opens the door for WT and No. 4 Abilene Christian to move and make Lone Star Conference history. The best top-5 showing to date was in 2003 when Texas A&M-Kingsville was No. 4 and Central Oklahoma No. 5.
