Vega's defense came up big in 2nd half

Vega quarterback Cameron Gruhlkey threw three touchdown passes in the first half as the Longhorns grabbed a 19-0 lead Friday at Boys Ranch. They needed that cushion as the Roughriders made things interesting in the second half in a 19-14 Vega win. Boys Ranch missed a couple of great scoring opportunities or the outcome might have been much different. The Roughriders scored with just over two minutes remaining but with no timeouts and not being able to recover an onside kick Vega was able to run the clock out and survive. Both teams are still alive to make the playoffs....Boys Ranch for the first time ever and Vega for the first time since 1989. I can't say enough about how nice the Boys Ranch stadium looks since a makeover last year. And I can't thank Boys Ranch assistant coach Chuck Bailey enough for letting me use his home phone line to get my story back to the paper.
