What a start to the season PD and Tascosa

Having covered high school football in the Texas Panhandle for more than 25 years, I have seen my share of games.

Watching Tascosa's 37-34 overtime win over Palo Duro looked at times like a season-opener all the way with mistakes in the kicking game and in some other areas.

But I'm here to tell that was as entertaining a game as I have witnessed in a long time.

Tremendous energy on the field by the players and we saw a clutch field goal in overtime by Tascosa's Barrett Conway. No gimmie at 37 yards.

Tascosa quarterback Dalton Brooks is primed for a monster year and he has a beast out at wide receiver in Toby Dennis. Defensively, keep an eye on junior linebacker Alejandro Magallanes. The guy is like Amarillo National Bank - everywhere!

Palo Duro's offense was impressive on the ground with its beef up front led by 310-pound Kolby Dunn and 250-pounder Josh Jacobo. The Dons will give defenses fits with their speed in the backfield in running backs Jerry Hill, Dartel Lewis, Denzel Everhart and quarterback Jaren "The Jet" Grayson.

Everhart opened my eyes when he burst up the middle for 51 yards in the first quarter opennig the scoring in this game.

Bottom line. I see Tascosa and Palo Duro better than they were last year.

In fact, just one week into the season I see coach Steve Parr and his Dons as the new favorite to win District 3-4A, not Randall, after what happened to the Raiders (56-0 loss) against Amarillo High.

Tascosa new head coach Ken Plunk just wins, baby. This is his third season as a head coach and Friday's thriller improved his regular season record to 18-3. That's an .857 winning percentage.

That's impressive.

Just like Friday's 48th meeting between Palo Duo and Tascosa.
