Hats off to Lubbock High

Lubbock High's 25-23 win over Midland Lee last weekend was a sweet sight for "Old District 2-5A" of Tascosa, Amarillo High, Lubbock Monterey, Lubbock Coronado, Lubbock and San Angelo Central.

Last year was the first season the UIL formed the "New District 2-5A" of 10 teams. The "Old 2-5A" mentioned above took it on the chin last year to the Permian Basin teams of Midland High, Midland Lee, Odessa High and Odessa Permian.

Well, more than on the chin. It was a flat out knockout. "New 2-5A" went 24-0 against "Old 2-5A." Yeah, 24 and zip.

So when Lubbock High pulled off the upset of Lee last weekend, Old School is now 1-5 against the New School this year and 1-29 over two years.

Who'd have ever thunk Lubbock High would have been the team to end the drought? Not me.

But here's a tip of the hat to Lubbock High coach Mike Speck. Way to go Westerners.
