Small Towns, Big Games

It seems that the smaller the town around here, the bigger the deal Friday night becomes. So with the local 5A schools off this week and most of the 4As off next week, now's as good a time as any to get caught up with what's going on further from home, particularly in Class 1A.

Not only did New York Times writer Jere Longman come to the area last week to cover two-time defending Class 1A state champion Canadian, but there was a clash of the small school titans when Class 2A Bushland visited Class 1A Stratford (both ranked No. 3 in the state in their classifications). Bushland won 35-9. a game which perhaps cemented the reputation of the Falcons as pound-for-pound the best team in the Panhandle.

There will be a big Class 1A game Friday night between two area powers in their final bow before district play starts, as Clarendon hosts Sunray. That game might not be quite as intriguing, though, as Canadian visiting Class 3A Perryton. The interesting thing about that is 3-1 Perryton has scored all of its victories so far this season over District 3-4A teams, but has a loss to Bushland and could have one to Canadian before it starts District 1-3A play.

The bigger they are...
