Night After a Wild Game

Midway through the football season, I have to say that Thursday night's game between Caprock and Midland Christian was the best, or at least most wildly entertaining game I've seen this season. In a game which featured over 800 yards of total offense and seven turnovers, all those elements proved to be crucial in Midland Christian winning 35-31.

If you're one of those old-fashioned types who loves the running game, there was a lot to like. Midland Christian had two runners go over 100 yards, as Hunter Redman ran for 157 yards and two touchdowns and Si Ratliff had 118 yards and a score. But the leading rusher (and best offensive player on the field) was Caprock's Jamar J0hnson, who ran for 160 yards and two touchdowns and caught six passes for 110 yards and two more scores. A case can be made that Johnson is the best running back in the Panhandle.

Coach Seth Parr and his Longhorns, while they might not believe in moral victories, were able to leave Dick Bivins Stadium last night knowing that they're a quality team which could easily be 5-0. Caprock can play with anybody offensively.

Tonight will be the second night in a row a Midland team will come to Bivins, as Tascosa will host Midland Lee in a key District 2-5A game. Having lived in Midland as recently as six weeks ago, that means I'll be seeing plenty of familiar names and faces this week. And I can sympathize with them over the length of the road trip.
