Sandies Having To Earn It

If Amarillo High makes the playoffs this season (which looks pretty likely at this point), nobody can say that the Sandies will have backed into it. AHS hasn't been the least bit intimidated by the Permian Basin schools this season, the four of whom filled out District 2-5A's allotted playoff spots last season. The Sandies have beaten defending district champion Odessa Permian (handing the Panthers their first loss in district play since 2006) and are coming off a thrilling win over Midland High on the road last week.

So how are the Sandies (5-1 and all alone in second place in district) rewarded for their performance this week? With their second straight trip to the Basin to face the one team ahead of them in the 2-5A standings, Odessa High, which is 6-0 in district. A share of the district lead and clinching a playoff berth is on the line Friday at Ratliff Stadium as well. The Bronchos will clinch a playoff berth with a victory, no questions asked, while the Sandies could possibly clinch a berth, but only with a win.

Those possibilities will be discussed more at length in Friday's Globe-News.
