Time To Get Serious

If you didn't feel like taking the high school football season seriously up to now, this week you've got no choice. Everybody will have started district play by the end of Friday night and the wins and losses will count for real.

The only teams who won't be starting district this week are two Six-Man teams (Fort Elliott and Miami), and that's only because they're in five-team districts where there is always an odd team out during district play. Otherwise, every team is playing a meaningful game this week.

Aside from the oddity of Amarillo High and Tascosa both playing on Thursday night (to accommodate Parr Bowl III between Caprock and Palo Duro and Dick Bivins Stadium), there's a lot of intrigue to follow this week. River Road and Panhandle open District 1-2A in a game which could likely determine the two playoff spots behind No. 2 Bushland (which looks like the prohibitive district favorite). District 1-1A has as interesting an opener as can be found anywhere, with defending state champion Stratford traveling to 5-0 Sunray.

So if this movie seems like its been going kind of slow so far, just wait. There are a whole lot of interesting plots and subplots about to unfold.
