Tulia WIll Forfeit To Muleshoe

Citing a shortage of players due to illness and injury, Tulia will forfeit this Friday’s District 1-2A football game against No. 4 Muleshoe.

Tulia coach Eric Wilson confirmed that the decision was made early Tuesday afternoon not to play Muleshoe simply due to a lack of numbers. Wilson said that anywhere from 15-20 athletes were sick or injured coming off last Friday night’s 49-0 loss to Friona in the district opener.

“What led to it was the number of injuries and illnesses we had so the superintendent and I made the decision,” Wilson said. “It just came down to a case of numbers.”

Wilson said that the Hornets practiced Monday and had a walk-through Tuesday, but that only 12 players were available for participation. While Wilson said that his team will try to conduct normal practices this week, the team is operating on a day-to-day basis regarding how to deal with the shortage of players. No decision has been made regarding the team’s status for next week’s game against Dimmitt.

Wilson said that the H1N1 virus, or swine flu, wasn’t the major culprit in the decision to forfeit the game. All Tulia ISD campuses are scheduled to remain open this week.
