Wheeler wins with class

I caught the Wheeler-Highland park game Friday night and came away not only impressed by Wheeler's dominating 55-0 performance, but the manner in which these Mustangs won.

First, Wheeler is a legit Class 1A team continuing playing in the shadow of the great 1A talent in the Texas Panhandle like Stratford, Canadian, Wellington, Sunray and Clarendon.

Wheeler senior running back Michael Gaines put up monster numbers running for 280 yards on a mere 13 carries and scoring four touchdowns. By halftime, Gaines had produced 243 yards and scored on runs of 68, 53, 48.

Gaines' performance led the way to a 42-0 lead.

Wheeler coach Brandon Smith only called on Gaines twice in the second half calling off the dogs and showing how to display class and handle a lopsided victory.

Instead of getting how great I am quotes following the game from Gaines, I immediately was hit with compliments for his offensive line.

From what I saw Friday night, it's easy to root for Coach Smith and Mustangs this year.
