Making A Transition

When you start getting boys basketball calls, it means one thing in the sports news business: High school football season is winding down.

Right now, there are more schools in the Panhandle playing basketball than there are playing football, as the first round of the playoffs thinned the ranks around here, especially in Class 4A and 5A, where Hereford was the only school in the upper two classifications to survive the first round on the gridiron. Considering that Thanksgiving is next week, a change in emphasis on sports is to be expected.

Which isn't to say that you still can't enjoy some football in the area, especially if you're a Class 1A fan. The most compelling matchups are within a half-hour drive, as Canadian and Wellington are playing at Canyon's Kimbrough Memorial Stadium and Sunray and Wheeler are squaring off at Dick Bivins Stadium.

So get out and enjoy some high school football while you can. Because the basketball calls are starting to come in.
