Why did Tech QB Potts wear "Nick" on his jersey?

LUBBOCK — “Nick” Potts?

When much talked-about — yes, even maligned — Texas Tech quarterback Taylor Potts walked into AT@T Jones Stadium Saturday afternoon the letters on the back of his No. 15 jersey spelled out Nick.Normally, the 6-foot-5 junior from Abilene wears his last name Potts across his shoulders.

So what was up?

“For the record, it was (Potts’) idea,” said Texas Tech coach Mike Leach.“That wasn’t my idea, that was coach’s idea,” Potts said.

Potts was quickly told in the press conference following Tech’s impressive 41-13 win over Oklahoma Saturday, Leach said it was Potts’ idea.

“Welp, I guess it was my idea,” Potts said.

Potts was strong against Oklahoma completing 35-of-53 passes for 388 yards and two touchdowns leading the Red Raiders to the most points scored against the Sooners all year.

However, he has experienced a roller-coaster ride in his first year to start for Tech. Potts has been pulled from games and even benched.“What I’m thinking right now is God is good,” Potts said. “This season has been ups and downs. This game was a big high.”

Potts reportedly wore the name Nick on the back of his practice jersey during workouts the past two weeks. The reason being Leach challenged him to play like former Kansas linebacker Nick Reid.

“I never had the opportunity to meet a guy named Nick Reid who was a linebacker for Kansas,” Leach said. “I always felt like he personified what a football player is, and what a football player should be. I’d actually like to have a picture of Nick Reid. Anyway, Potts was going through some tough times and we decided all of our players should be like Nick. Even better would be to be led by Nick. So we figured it wouldn’t hurt us to have a Nick.”

By the way, Reid is currently a linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks. Leach was told he made a sack last week.“I’ll bet it was a good one,” Leach said.

Um, no. That would be Nick Reed who attended Oregon and happens to be black. Nick Reid of KU that Leach refers to played in NFL's Europa league shortly and is now living in Wichita, KS working for his family business. It's unlikely he had a sack in the NFL this season.
