Win Some, Lose Some

The good news for Amarillo High on Thursday night was that the Sandies concluded their District 2-5A season by thumping Lubbock High on the road 52-7, capping a stellar regular season which gives them an 8-2 record.

The bad news was that the Sandies lost a coin flip with El Paso Montwood for next week's bidistrict playoff game, and they'll have to travel to El Paso next Saturday. True, Amarillo High is a playoff team and is used to traveling, but strange things can happen to teams who have to venture to the far regions of West Texas. Odessa High, the 2-5A champion, opened the season at Montwood and lost 20-13. Consider that OHS hasn't lost since, and that among Odessa's victories was a 30-13 win over Amarillo High, and that's not a good omen for the Sandies.

But the playoffs are a new start for everyone, and there's a chance for new history to be made. So congratulations are in order for the Sandies, but be wary of that long road west.
